Leticia Ortega (Ellen Ochoa Learning Center)
1. What made you become part of SRLA?
Well, it all started when I was a teacher assistant
at Edison Middle School. The leader needed a couple of adults to help out with the students; my daughter was one of the runners,
so I thought it would be a good idea to help out and at the same time keep an eye on my then 8th grader, not to mention that
running could help me lose some weight. Little did I know that one day I would become an SRLA leader and that my school staff
could be so supportive and proud to be part of SRLA.
2. How long have you been in the program?
I have been with the program for 8 years. Five as a friend or co-leader and three as the primary leader.
It could have been ten, but had to take some time off due to school and family. So I'm looking forward to a few more running
seasons as long as my health allows.
3. What do you teach?
I currently teach
Algebra and 8th grade physical science.
4. WHat do you like best about SRLA?
What
I love the best about SRLA is the feeling of family I sense when 3000 plus of us are out there. The love and commitment of
the leaders to help each one of their youngsters inspires me to be a better leader. I also enjoy each race and like to encourage
kids from every school. Many times just a couple of words make a big difference and give little burst of energy to the runners,
especially in the longer races. SRLA not only helps kids at risk, it also helps me as a person, it works both ways.
5. What are your hobbies other than running?
I know that physical activity is a must,
but I can't help being a jelly head sometimes, I like to play old school video games, Brain Age, and Guitar Hero III (I'm
up to the medium level now) and once in a while I just stay home watching old movies.
6. What is
your favorite restaurant in the L.A. area?
There is a small Thai food restaurant where my family and
I like to go. It is located between 7th & 8th streets and Vermont, the name is Thai Ocean.
7.
