Finishing the Southern California Half Marathon

Craig Moss - Mt. Gleason Middle School

What made you want to lead kids to run the L.A. Marathon?
I started an SRLA program on campus cause I loved running and thought that I could get kids on my campus to run like I had seen others do at their schools. Best decision I ever made.

What is the best thing about being part of SRLA?
Ever aspect is awesome (except the whole getting up early thing). But I quess if I had to pick one it is when I schedule a short practice say 6 miles on a weekend after a we have been running longer distances and the kids say "6 miles that's it? That's easy." At that point I know I have developed runners.

What do you teach?
I teach 7th grade health and biology. I also teach a fitness class.

How do you manage the largest SRLA team?
Managing the team can be difficult at times like when we are getting back on the bus after a race and need to take roll, but for the most part it is easy. I spend alot of time running next to each kid in practice getting to know them and they get to know me better. Our mutal respect helps when it comes to discipline and organization. They really listen to me (I know I am shocked too!)

What are some of your other hobbies and interests aside from running?
Other than running I like to run, and workout, and run, and read, and run, and go to the movies and run. Oh and run. I also like to check email every 4 days (right Paul?)

Who was your greatest influence as a youth?
Other than my mom, a huge influence in my life that was not family was my high school track coach. I quess I coach the same way he coached me...everyone is invited to participate as long as you try your best and no one is better than anyone on the team, we are all equals.

What is the most important thing you can do to prepare for the marathon?
If this is your first year as a coach to prepare for the marathon you should ask as many other coaches for ideas as possible. You may not use any of the ideas but at least it gets you to think of what is involved in getting all your kids through the race.
